Directory Information

Directory Information refers to student educational records that an institution may disclose without prior written consent from the student or parent, as they are considered non-sensitive personal data. These records typically include basic identifying information that would appear in a school directory and are designated by the institution as releasable to the general public.

Regulatory Definitions
  • FERPA (20 U.S.C. § 1232g and 34 CFR § 99.3): Directory Information is defined as information contained in an education record that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Under FERPA, institutions must publish their definition of directory information and allow students or parents to opt-out of the disclosure of their directory information. Common examples include name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, and major field of study. However, institutions have discretion in determining what constitutes directory information at their institution.
